As we live, we learn. I quickly answered Kates question with "If my blood sugar begins to rise rapidly I will just use the pens until the pump is working properly." That was enough to get approval and we went on talking about the pump and how it will be great for my diabetes management.
From this conversation I learned that it was never the pumps fault, it was mine. I walked away from the pump because I was not properly prepared for when the pump did not deliver insulin. The second time around we are better prepared and that is true in this situation. I will make sure that I have a pen of Humalog within reach at all times just in case the pump does not deliver insulin. That means I will have a pen in the refrigerator at work, a pen in our bedroom, in the fridge at my parents house, a pen when we go on vacation, a pen when I'm at a football game, a pen with me when I'm on a field trip with the children and when Kate and I go to the beach. No matter where I go I will have a pen with me, to some that may sound like it is overkill but to me it is being prepared. My blood sugar was so far out of range when I wasn't prepared for my pump to not deliver insulin, that will never happen again. I'm a little ashamed I wasn't prepared, moving forward I will be prepared and I will learn!!
