That was all before I ever started to ride a bike. The bike and diabetes is a whole different relationship and one that I work on each and everyday. It sounds impossible but fixing a blood sugar that is below my target range while going 18mph is possible. For me if I'm riding I can drink 20oz of Gatorade and eat a Cliff Bar to fix my blood sugar.
That knowledge is now being tested as I try my best to become a ultra runner. I have mastered the bike and eating but running is a different story. I have all of the food and drink that I will need but if I'm at mile 25 of a race and fall out of range what happens? I don't know, I have the food to correct it but will that food stay down? Puking is a huge part of ultra running and this is just another concern that I have before Saturdays race.
What I do know is that I have run this course before, I ran it for 18 miles and had no problem. In fact I would finish in the top ten and that gave me the confidence to chase my dream of running a 50k. All I'll do this week is worry about the race. Once I'm on that trail and the gun sounds the worry goes away for me. No matter what happens I will be ok and I will do all that I can to have blood sugars that are in range.
