Just about a month ago I wrote an article about the uncertainty of Novo Nordisk extending their contract to sponsor the worlds first all diabetes cycling team.  This morning I woke up just before 6:30 and as always I got out of bed and strolled over to my computer to check my email, sitting in my inbox was an email with the offical press release informing myself and the world that Novo Nordisk extended their commitment to the worlds first all-diabetes professional cycling team through 2019.  I could have ran out of gas driving to work, stepped in a present from a dog, or forgot my wallet at home but I would've still had a great day because I knew Team Novo Nordisk has a new contract.

As a cyclist I love this news because I know how difficult it is to secure a sponsorship for a pro cycling team.  In fact many pro cycling teams have two title sponsors and some are even without a sponsor heading into the 2018 season.  Then comes the human part of a professional cycling team, the members of any cycling team are human just like you and I.  They have husbands or wives, they might have children, they have bills, and everyday worries just like everyone else.  Having a title sponsor lets them sleep a little easier, of course they still have a job to do but for the next two years they have a job.

”Every day, we provide the diabetes community with heroes to look up to and show the 1.2 billion people around the world directly affected by diabetes what may be possible.” Phil Southerland

When it comes to diabetes, Novo Nordisk continuing to sponsor the worlds first all-diabetes pro cycling team offers inspiration to anyone living with diabetes.  To understand the impact Team Novo Nordisk has on the diabetes world all you have to do is visit the Team Novo Nordisk Moments page.  On this page Team Novo Nordisk allows anyone living with diabetes the ability to share the moment when they realized that diabetes would not stop them!!  Team Novo Nordisk is about dreaming big and realizing those dreams.  Team Novo Nordisk is made up of individuals that have heard they couldn't do something because they have diabetes.  They ignored those people that said the couldn't live their dreams, they have worked to show the world that anything is possible with diabetes.

Team Novo Nordisk is doing amazing things on the bike but it is what they do before or after a race and during the offseason that is helping so many with diabetes.  It is the time members of Team Novo Nordisk spend at camps, hospitals and with their fans before a race that changes diabetes.  I have said it since the beginning but Team Novo Nordisk is a family, anyone living with diabetes is a family member.  We all have diabetes and we all care and love one another, whenever one of us needs someone to talk to we have a family member willing to lend a hand.  Team Novo Nordisk understands that they are the inspiration and they will do all that they can to help anyone living with diabetes.

It is a member of Team Novo Nordisk sitting down with a family and sharing their experiences with them.  That little bit changes the world for not only the child living with diabetes but the parents and siblings as well.  I see photos of team members with children that are living with diabetes and I smile, sometimes that smile is accompanied by tears of joy.  I look at the photo above and I can put myself in the children's shoes, I remember being their age and I remember how I longed for an athlete to sit and talk to me about life with diabetes.  I'm a 35 year old that has gotten to live his dream because of Team Novo Nordisk, I mean I ran a 50k because I was inspired by a member of Team Novo Nordisk.  I have a fiance that smiles each and every time I put on my Team Novo Nordisk kit. Every time I go for a bike ride she knows how much it means to me to have the kit on and how it has saved my life.  In fact she might love the team more than me, the team has given her a guy that loves life and that is dedicated to his diabetes so that he can live until one hundred with the girl of his dreams by his side.  I mean what better way to celebrate our second wedding anniversary then by being in France on July 7th, 2020 watching Team Novo Nordisk race in the Tour de France!!

I can't close this post without saying thank you to Novo Nordisk.  Not only are you sponsoring the most inspirational team in the world but you are also dedicated to discovering, developing and manufacturing better biological medicines and making them accessible to people with diabetes throughout the world.  You are the man behind the curtain but without you none of this would be possible!!  THANK YOU FOR CHANGING DIABETES!!
