I will continue to run trails and ride my bike until the first major snowstorm. A lot of my time will spent inside working with weights and improving my flexibility. As I made my way to work with Christmas music blasting and the snow falling I started to think of what I wanted to do race wise in 2017. My 2017 racing season will be a busy one as I have gotten a lot of confidence as an athlete with diabetes and as a person since September. As an athlete with diabetes I feel that I finally have control of blood sugars before, during and after any race, be it a 5k or a 50k. I also believe in myself as a person which goes a long way as an athlete, I know I have what it takes to finish a 50k and have gotten the support needed to know that I can finish. It doesn't sound like much but when people believe in you and are genuine it changes everything.
I'm a new person and a new athlete with a new outlook on everything!! That is evident when I'm racing or training, I now enjoy every second of it. I enjoy the scenery, I enjoy the people, and I enjoy that I have the ability to run or ride a bike. Although I may not win a race I have a gift, it may be getting more popular but to run a 50k is not something anyone can do.
Right now the 2017 season definitely has the Chicago Marathon, that is the only race that is certain. I will run at least one 50k although I would love to run two. I would also love to run a 50 mile race in the fall of 2017. The JFK 50 Mile race is on the list right now. As always the race is a personal goal but not being run for myself. I wouldn't keep the medal or the bib. Those would go to my parents, not only did they both love JFK they are two of the most important people in my life and after the past year giving them the medal and bib with pictures of me running would be the best gift I could ever give them. They're the ones that have taught me to keep pushing no matter how bad it gets, be it life or diabetes. Nothing says keep pushing and keep fighting like a 50 mile race.
An official 2017 race schedule will be announced in December after sitting down and making sure that each race is convenient for all of the important people in my life. Who knows I could even be running a race in Seattle, California, or Atlanta time will tell!!
