After a lot of time thinking about staying with the pump or going to shots I have decided to go back to shots. After a summer of change going back to shots will be part of the change. This decision was not made just to make a change but for medical and and athletic reasons. Far to many times this summer did I have a faulty pump site, will shots solve all of my blood sugar problems? Definitely not but it will make my performance as an athlete and a person with diabetes that much better.

This past summer I had the privilege of being with some very elite athletes that are living with diabetes. These athletes had pumps but a lot more were successfully manage their diabetes with shots. I had never known an athlete with diabetes that was using shots until that week. Having the honor to sit down and talk cycling and diabetes with these athletes made the decision for me. Obviously each and every person living with diabetes is different but I truly believe going back to shots will be best.

The transition will be a lot easier as I will have my cgm on me at all times. This will make seeing how my blood sugar reacts to shots very easy. During this transition I will continue to train and be on the bike almost daily. Obviously the transition will not be easy but I'm always up for a challenge. I also know that once the challenge is over I will be having more blood sugars in range and a much better A1C. At the end of the day that is all that matters!!

Last week I just finished my 4th TransAlp mountainbike tour but my first one without a pump. Had some worries about it in the beginning but as the week passed I learned more and more how to handle my diabetes with shots. I'm still a bit in a learning process when it comes to cycling for multiple hours (4+hrs) or days but I think I am doing quite ok. Good luck with your change!
