As an athlete with diabetes I was very happy to see that almost nine hundred people attended the annual EASD 5k. Along with many others I believe that exercise is very important to keeping blood sugar in range. The annual EASD 5k is for everyone, from the pro athlete that runs the course in times that are to believe to the person that is walking the course. Almost nine hundred people came together to change diabetes. One of the greatest things about the 5k are the shirts that participants could purchase. The shirt isn't just a shirt that someone can buy to remember the race but a shirt that is changing the life of someone living with diabetes in Rwanda. As an athlete with diabetes and someone that loves every sport I love that the 5k is a part of the EASD event. It is exercise that helps me have better control of my blood sugars. Getting on the bike or running is what makes controlling my diabetes fun, I'm in charge!! Yes amazing technological advancements and news has come from EASD this year but it is the exercise that will never ever leave our life. When a cure is found for diabetes that doesn't mean that everything health wise in our lives will be fixed. Staying at the proper weight or having a perfect blood pressure does not come with with a cure or a form of technology that makes managing my blood sugar easier. At the end of the day we all need some kind of exercise of to be healthier and happier. I love the EASD 5k and am hoping to be at the 2018 edition!!
