Ever since Sunday Silence won the first two races of the triple crown in 1989 I have been a fan of horse racing. As I have gotten older I have learned just how difficult the triple crown can be to run never mind win. This week I got to thinking about what a cycling triple crown would be like.
Just like the horse racing triple crown, the cycling triple crown would have a fast race, average distance race and the once in a lifetime race. The first race would be a 20 mile criterium, a very fast and technical race. Two weeks later would be the 100 mile race that would have 3 category climbs. The last race much like the horse racing race would be a once in a lifetime race. It would be the race across America. RAAM would be raced three weeks after the 100 mile race.
For many cyclists the first two races would be "easy". It would be the final race that did many cyclists in. Even many pros would have trouble racing RAAM, that is what would make a cycling triple crown amazing. If this fictional race were to ever be real I would say that it would take ten years or more for a rider to win the triple crown of cycling.
I hope that everyone enjoys the race and if anyone has an idea for a diabetes triple crown I would love to hear it.
