The people at Team Novo Nordisk do a great job of recapping the stage, I will take my own road here and talk about the joy I felt as a fan and as an athlete living with diabetes. As huge fan of the team and one that has been lucky enough to cover the team as member of the media I was nervous and disappointed in the 2017 season. I worried that the team wouldn't be a team in 2018. As weird as it sounds Kate and I sat at our dinner table and talked about why the team would get a contract and we talked about what would happen if the team didn't get a contract. I mean I only ride my bike with Team Novo Nordisk kits on, I only run with Team Novo Nordisk singlets and shirts. This team has been the one that changed diabetes for me and millions across the globe.
A new attitude was brought to the team as their new contract was signed. The team was having fun at camp and was excited for the 2018 season to start. A top ten by Andrea Peron in the first stage of the year is great but will not make the season, personally I hope we forget about this before July, that means a couple stage wins, and that is totally possible!! You can tell that this is a different team in the way the members of the team speak before and after stages, they're having fun!!
I haven't even talked about what the team was doing before the stage began. As always the team was talking to their fans, both those living with and without diabetes. That is the heart and soul of this team, bad race or great race what this team is doing off of the bike is tremendous!! A special shoutout to a great friend, Brais Dacal for speaking about the team and what they are doing for diabetes before the start of the race in Dubai!! I always like to say that a stage like today saved someones life. A person living with diabetes that is having a difficult time saw what Charles Planet did today and it was a life changing moment. This person could see that anything is possible with diabetes and that yes it is difficult but if Charles Planet and the rest of Team Novo Nordisk can ride with the best cyclists in the world then anything is possible with diabetes.
