Team Novo Nordisk Notches Nine Top 10 Finishes During Doubleheader
“So far this year, Team Novo Nordisk has earned more top 10 finishes than our entire 2014 season,” said Team Novo Nordisk co-founder & CEO, Phil Southerland. “The dedication and hard work of every single athlete is paying off and the entire organization is really proud of what they have accomplished on the road. We will aggressively go after more results later this summer when we start racing again at Tour of Denmark.”
The American-registered pro continental squad is currently in is third season and started 2015 strong when Scott Ambrose (NZL) soloed to victory on Stage 2 of the Tour de Filipinas. Sprinter Martijn Verschoor (NED) has earned seven top 10 finishes this year including top five overall at the Tour of Estonia and climber Javier Megias (ESP) finished 10th overall at the Tour of Turkey. At Tour de Korea, sprinter Andrea Peron (ITA), was responsible for four of the top 10 finishes, including a third place podium finish on stage 5.
Team Novo Nordisk, which consists entirely of athletes with diabetes, also includes a development team and junior team, currently totaling 30 riders. Top 10 results at the Tour de Korea and Tour de Beauce came from five different riders, including two neo-pros, underscoring the professional squad’s growing depth.
“Andrea's podium and three additional top ten finishes, along with the team's combined total of nine top 10 finishes last week, are a reflection of the amazing performance and growth by the team overall,” Team Novo Nordisk General Manager Vassili Davidenko said. “We put a lot of focus on recruiting and developing young talent in an effort to achieve one of our long term goals, to race at the Tour de France, and these results show we are definitely on the right track.”
With nearly 90 race days completed this season, Team Novo Nordisk now heads into a midseason break. The team will meet in late July for a training camp in Italy before heading to the Tour of Denmark, Arctic Race of Norway and the USA Pro Challenge in August.
“Andrea and his teammates are consistently performing better, the team is getting stronger, and we are excited to see what the rest of the season will bring when we start racing again at Tour of Denmark in August,” Davidenko added.
