I have lived with diabetes for just over twenty-four years and I have never been so proud to say that I'm a diabetic. Whenever I speak to large groups or people see my insulin pump or my medical alert tattoo the first words out of their mouths are "Do you know about Team Novo Nordisk?" Hearing that gives me chills because after years of hoping for any kind of pro team to bring diabetes to the forefront Team Novo Nordisk has done just that.
The world is starting to notice the all diabetes cycling team that is changing the world of diabetes. People have noticed and written about the team before this years Tour of California but it always seemed to be one article and that was it. This week all I have seen on my Twitter and Facebook feeds are links to articles or news clips that are profiling Team Novo Nordisk. (Links to those articles and videos are below) In a few years when Team Novo Nordisk is being profiled on 60 minutes, Good Morning America, and The Today Show I will look back to the 2015 Tour of California and know that is where it all changed.
Looking to the future, it is so bright for the team, they want the spotlight but not for themselves. The team gives their time to be interviewed and they take the time to take pictures with fans. They don't want the fame or the money that comes with it, they want to change diabetes by proving that anything is possible with diabetes. Seeing team members finish just outside the top ten this past week was amazing, I follow this team like the members are my brother. I want nothing more than to see them win a stage in the biggest cycling race that the United States has. Why do I want this? I want them to win because they have changed the world of diabetes, they saved my life, and have saved the lives of so many others that were where I was. They give hope to everyone living with diabetes, they find the diabetic that has a high A1C and doesn't care about his or her diabetes. They find that person and change their world for the better, they show them what is possible and that through hard work and perserverance you can and will be in control of your diabetes. Thank you Team Novo Nordisk, you are changing diabetes and have the entire diabetes community behind you each and every time you race!!
