Surgery and Racing

In just over two weeks I will have surgery on my neck to fuse two bones in my neck.  It is weird but the other night Kate and I had a nice conversation about nerves and how it effects things in our everyday life.  I have been feeling a little off the past couple days and she asked if I was stressed out because of my surgery.  I answered honestly and said "I can't control any part of it, I have trust the doctor and know that everything will be fine.  The only thing I can control is my pump and my blood sugar, the rest will take care of itself."

This afternoon that all changed as I went to the hospital to get blood work, an ekg and x-ray for the surgery.  I got a little nervous, I mean being in a hospital brings nerves to anyone.  I think that the thought of surgery finally hit me and that the road to recovery will be a long one.  I will be fine but as always it won't be easy.  I have been fine since returning home, my nerves are back to normal and I'm looking forward to the surgery.

The funny thing is that I have been planning my return to running while I have been out of work because of my neck the past couple weeks.  My return should be at the Blessing of the Fleet in Rhode Island towards the end of June.  That will allow plenty of time to recover and train.  I also decided to enter a lottery to try and run the Mount Washington Road Race on June 16th.  This is a race that I have looked at for years but have yet to enter.  The funny thing is the lottery results come out on March 1st, that is the day that I will be having my surgery, I'll be knocked out and once I'm out of surgery I will want to let everyone that loves me that I'm okay and give a kiss to Kate but the next thing will be checking to see if I got a spot in the race.  That is kind of sad but running and racing will get me through the tough days that will come after the surgery.
