After a two hour drive with no problems blood sugar wise we were ready to head in to the Garden for the game. This was my wife’s first Bruins game, as excited as she was I think my excitement level was easily ten times higher. My last Bruins game was back in 2003 when I saw the Bruins lose to the Devils in the playoffs. Before heading to our seats I had to see the ice, I felt like a child on Christmas. As I saw the ice and the banners hanging from the rafters I got a chill. The history that the Bruins made last year just adds to the history and lore of the franchise and the “new” garden. When we got to our seats I just sat there and took in my surroundings, I don’t think I moved until the first period had ended. I wanted a pretzel and some diet coke. I don’t know what it is about sporting events but I need a pretzel and a soda, it has become a ritual. As I waited in line the diabetic side came back, do I need this pretzel? If I eat it and take the wrong insulin my attitude could be messed up for the rest of the day, was it worth it? I decided why not I’m here to enjoy myself and if I can’t figure out the units of insulin to cover the pretzel then I’m not as good as a diabetic as I thought. Pretzel in hand I gave myself 3.2 units said a little diabetic prayer and hoped for the best. Although the game ended with the Bruins losing the game was amazing and my wife did a great job getting me the tickets for my birthday.
Leaving the garden we all decided to head to the car so I could check my blood sugar and drop off the souvenir cup my diet coke had come in. When I saw 113 on the meter I let out a sigh of relief, now we could all head over to the north end for a nice Italian dinner. The dinner was amazing; the food was good but the conversation and catching up with good friends made it amazing. When my wife and I arrived home I would test my blood sugar one more time to see if my diabetes had enjoyed the day as much as I had, when I saw 165 it gave me a feeling that I really understand my body and my disease. As a diabetic you can’t ask for a better feeling. As a person I couldn’t ask for a better birthday present but now the bar has been raised and I need to make my wife’s birthday better than mine.
As for the Super Bowl today, I have no rooting interest at all. My prediction for the game is that we will see the first overtime ever in the Super Bowl, in the end the Patriots kick a 48yd field goal to beat the Giants 20-17 in overtime.
