Something Bit Me

This morning as I prepared for my run, I was in a very odd mood.  I often know how my workout or a race will go an hour before the event starts.  A lot of this is due to having diabetes, if I have a blood sugar that is below 80 or above 200 I know that the training or race will probably be a bit difficult.  When my blood sugar is in that 120 to 160 range I know things are going to be pretty good.  Obviously I don't have to worry as much about my blood sugar when it is in the 120 to 160 range, which allows me to concentrate on training or racing.

Last summer as I prepared for the New York City marathon I learned how to run and learned a lot about listening to my body.  I'm still learning but one thing that I have learned is that I can tell how good or bad a run is going to be in the first quarter mile.  This morning in that first quarter mile I knew that today would be a great day, for the first time since December I was able to find my rhythm.  With that rhythm came the running bug and it bit me hard, my run was nothing crazy but for almost four miles I was in my zone.  I was enjoying my run and was racing on coming traffic at one point, it's an odd game I created.  I will see a car in the distance and pick a halfway marker for the car and myself, I then try to beat the car to that point.  This is technically a fartlek but is a lot more fun, for people that are bit off like myself I encourage you to give it a try.

Unfortunately Easy Ed was acting up this morning and didn't come along for the run, he has bounced back this afternoon however and will be around for the rest of my workouts this week.  Pre and post run however my blood sugars were decent, 173 pre run and 111 post run.  Right now I'm more concerned with my blood sugars two to three hours after a run.  Today I was able to dial in the correct amount of insulin that would cover my post run protein snack.  Mentally that was huge, having a blood sugar of 149 two hours after a run gives me the confidence to run tomorrow and to be excited about it.
