When I returned home I quickly turned in to a lazy snow bum for the day. Honestly it was just what the diabetes and I needed. A day of watching the bruins and reading a book would keep my blood sugar below 120 all day. I did pause for a moment today to reflect on the joys I used to have as a child when it snowed. The hours spent in my parents’ backyard with my brother making sledding trails down the hill or the hours spent with other children in the neighborhood playing tackle football or having snowball fights. We all know that somehow snowball fights are not safe anymore; someone could get hurt and end up getting sued. A part of me wants to throw on the snow boots, three layers of pants and shirts, grab my gloves and head out in the fresh coat of snow and act like a child. I still have a lot of time left in the day and I have a feeling that may happen. For those who can’t find anything to do on a true New England snow day I suggest that they don’t think about the negatives the snow has brought but instead go outside even it’s just for a few minutes and remember the joys of snow. I have a feeling the fun that will follow will last the rest of the weekend.
For all the bad I have read and heard about the snow we got today I have had nothing but good come from it. I did decide to venture out just after seven this morning to get the weekly shopping done. What a great idea, it was amazing how serene the world seemed. The five minute ride to the store took a little bit longer and I needed to be more alert well driving but the scene was one out of a book. As great as the ride was I believe the friendliness of the workers at the store surprised me the most. As many know unless I know someone very well I will not have an in depth conversation with someone. I don’t know if it was the snow but I had a nice five minute chat with the bread guy, about the Patriots game tomorrow afternoon. This middle aged man reminded me a lot of my father, his laid back demeanor and wealth of knowledge about the Patriots was refreshing.
