Last night at dinner I was not hesitant to pull out my glucose machine and test right at the table. Dave and Kristen will often ask how my blood sugar is and ask why it is at a certain level or ask how I will cover for the food that I'm preparing to eat. Last night Leanne was talking about how she was sick before Christmas, she explained how she needed to head to the emergency room early one morning because she was feeling so bad. She also explained how she needed to wait because at 4am my blood sugar was very low, after she explained my low blood sugar she was interupted by Dave asking "Wait what happened, how come your pump wasn't going crazy telling you that you were low?" I explained that it was a "day off" for me from my sensor, that I didn't have the sensor on because I needed a day off from the sensor. Dave is a very honest person and seeing that we are very close he doesn't care how his comment effects me. We are close and he cares so he was brutally honest with his comment. He looked at his wife and said "Honey when we go home, lets take all of the batteries out of the smoke detectors. We have never had a fire at the house so lets take them out so we can sleep well."
I was sitting their in shock, here I am complaining about this tool that is made to save my life and I just want a day off because the sensor hurts a little bit. His comment made quite the impact on me, you would never take the batteries out of your smoke detectors so why is it that I have access to a CGM but will take a day off. It makes no sense. The funny part is that no one else could have made a comment like that without me being pissed off, he made sure he got his point across and made sure I felt like crap for a little bit because I risked my life and almost lost. Friends are amazing and are the ones that make us realize how dumb we can be sometimes.
