Small Changes

As the weather gets colder the  basal rate battle begins for me.  With the colder weather the jobs that I'm doing at work become a little less strenuous.  My days are less about cardio and more about working on the machines that give me eight hours of cardio all summer.  Obviously that means that some changes need to be made to my basal rates.  The toughest part about changing the basal rates is getting them dialed in correctly, I'm not quite at my winter basal rate and my summer rate would keep my blood sugar to high all day long.

My summer basal rate gave me 16.55 units of insulin per day.  After my tweaks that number is at 17.325 units.  My basal rate is currently at:

12A 0.65
3A 0.70
6:30A 0.725
9A 0.65
12:30P 0.70
4P 0.80

With my 4pm basal rate so high, it is very important that I set a temporary basal rate for my workouts in the afternoon.  I'm sure that I will forget once or twice this week and wonder why I'm so low after a run.  Today my new basal rate did very well, the best part of all of this is that I emailed my doctor and was told that the changes I made look good and to keep a closer eye on my blood sugars this week.  It is so great to have a doctor that is available 24/7.  These rates will change again in November as work really slows down.  I also have an interesting new workout and sport planned for the winter which I can't wait to blog about tomorrow!!
