Shifting Gears

Each night I try my best to blog about diabetes and how it has affected my day or my life.  I hope that by blogging about my experiences that it helps others when they are faced with similar situations.  I must say that the amount of support I have received from so many is very humbling.  I have received support from a wide array of people, from family members to people that I have never met that have read my story and want to help.

Tonight I want to shift gears, diabetes is the main focus in my life but tonight I want to talk about Alzheimer's disease.  Alzheimers disease and diabetes are very similar when they are presented to the general public.  When asked about diabetes people often think that someone has eaten to much sugar and therefore has gotten diabetes.  When asked about Alzheimers many people including myself think that it isn't that bad, people that have Alzhiemers may forget little things like a phone number or birthdays, other than that it can't be that bad.  As many people know Alzheimers has been on the news a lot today because of Seth Rogens trip to congress to discuss Alzheimers with the Senate subcommittee.

Why does someone like myself, someone that talks about diabetes day in and day out talking about Alzheimers?  No, I'm not trying to be cool and get my website noticed by talking about something that is national news.  I'm talking about Alzheimers because it is affecting Seth Rogens mother in law.  I had the pleasure of meeting Seth and his wife Lauren at one of Leannes college roommates weddings.  Before heading down to Florida for the wedding I was told by Leanne that Seth Rogen would be at the wedding because his wife was one of the bridesmaids.  I remember saying "who", I had never heard of Seth Rogen and wasn't nervous to meet him, as I said to Leanne "I don't care who the guy is, he's human and just like me."  I met Seth quickly at the rehearsal dinner and I quickly felt bad for him, we were at a local restaurant and many people came up to him for a picture or just to say hi.  That night I told Leanne that I felt bad for Seth and his wife, they couldn't even go out for drinks because everyone at the bar was around Seth.  I told her at the wedding if I get a chance to talk to him I'm going to be my usual weird self.  At the wedding the photos with Seth continued, I introduced myself by asking if he could take a picture of me with some of Leannes friends.  Again I'm odd and needed an odd way to approach him, after the photo which is above, I bet him that if he was asked to be in more than 30 photos I would buy him a drink, every few minutes he would walk by and say a number.  The number got to 45, at the dinner I finally got to buy him a drink and got to meet the real Seth Rogen, not Seth Rogen the movie star.  As I thought Seth was a normal person, he is an amazing individual with an amazing wife. I got to speak with Seth for forty five minutes and it was about real life things, I told him about my diabetes and my struggles and he told me about his mother in law and her Alzheimers.  That night as I left the wedding I had a new understanding of Alzheimers and a new friend.  Seth and his wife are two amazing people, they have been so supportive when it comes to diabetes that I thought the best way I could help them was by blogging about what is near and dear to their hearts.  I'm ashamed that I did not do it sooner however.

I ask that everyone takes a moment to help someone that is battling Alzheimers, you can go here to make a donation that will help those in need.
