I never played football so this will be as close as I come to being a part of the game. A nice 5k to show that Westerly is not only better on the football field but also has much better runners. Personally it will be a nice change of pace race, a little speed race after weeks of longer runs . I have also decided to challenge my basketball athletes, November 30th is our first day of tryouts. To get their competitive spirits going and to get them working out before the first I have decided that whoever beats me in the 5k will not have to run the mile on the first day of tryouts. My hope is that I beat them all and that a few get sick trying to beat me, I'm getting older and having something to beat them in is becoming harder to find. I know that they will give me a hard time all season if they do beat me and yes I will do the same if I beat them, I'm a child at heart, I can't help it.
I also have a good friend and fellow coach that was talking trash during last years race that I would love to beat. Last year I finished an unacceptable 13 seconds behind him. He has started to talk trash again this year, he passed me in his truck while I was doing a hill workout, he would later text me "Do hills all you want, I'm still going to pass you on the final hill!!" This person has quite the history as a sprinter, numerous records at URI and was an olympic reserve in 1998. Although he doesn't get why I love running long distance he has a way of motivating me and has helped me tremendously when it comes to training. What better way to say thank you then by beating him on Sunday!!
For anyone that is in the Westerly area I encourage you to check out the race and be a part of a race that will be come a fixture in the town every Sunday before Thanksgiving for years to come. To learn more please visit Rivalry Run 5K. Besides the 5k they will be having a kids run so be sure to sign up the entire family, it will be a great day for all ages!! I look forward to seeing everyone at the race!!!
