As I was working today I began to think about diabetes scholarships, are any available? Before I could do any research I began to think about the possibility of a diabetes scholarship for Rhode Island. Obviously a major sponsor is needed and I understand the amount of work that will need to be done to even the idea off the ground. What has me excited however is the possibilities, once a major corporation is locked in then its game on. Marketing would have to be done in all Rhode Island hospitals, a flyer at doctors offices, simple marketing like that. Then comes the marketing inside schools, maybe the scholarship could go to anyone who does some kind of diabetes community service. The more applicants the more diabetes is getting out to everyday people. A guest speaker at high schools, talking about his or her story, letting people know about diabetes, and raising awareness. As I always say we can't sit back and expect people to learn about diabetes, as diabetics we need to get out in the community and inform people. The scholarship would then be awarded at a dinner and presented to the student by a prominent person living with Diabetes. Imagine the press if Bret Michaels or Jay Cutler presented the scholarship.
Trust me more research will be done and I can't guarantee anything but you can be assured that I will work my butt off to try and get the ball rolling on this idea. After doing a bit of research I did find that a number of scholarships are available to diabetics. They are all on a national scale however. I do feel better after finding this information but I will continue to try and get a more local scholarship started for Type 1 diabetics living in Rhode Island.
