The weather would play a huge factor in todays race, a bone chilling twenty mile per hour breeze would be in our face while running. That coupled with a temperature of 50 at the start of the race made it a not so perfect race day. I believe that my warmup 10k (running from the finish to the start) helped tremendously. I arrived very early and got my number, I did so and wanted no part of racing. It was cold, dark and just not a nice morning. I got everything setup, tested my blood sugar and contemplated getting on the bus to head to the start line. As I sat there thinking about what to do something hit me, was I going to take the easy way out and let the weather win or was I going to push myself to be better than I am. With that I started a very slow jog to the start. The run to the start would take an hour and ten minutes, I was just out to loosen up and get in a good day of training.
I arrived at the start as a new man, I was sweating rocking out to my music and feeling good. A quick snack filled with some caffeine a test of my blood sugar and ten minutes to prepare for the race was perfect. As the race began I was a little tight and it took me a good mile or so to get into race mode. Once I got comfortable it was on, I felt like my old self again. I'm not sure if it is because I have a huge race planned, I always do better when I have a race to train for or if the planets aligned just right. The last five miles of the race I felt as good as I have all year, my kick was strong and I was running very well. The 10k warmup caught up to me as I hit the five mile mark, I was still running strong but I was starting to feel it. The person that was a hundred meters or so ahead of me started pulling away and my legs got sore. I would finish strong and very happy as I crossed the line.
My goal for any race is to finish in the top 100 and in the top ten of my age group. I got one of two which I'm happy about, today was a difficult day with the weather. I like how I felt and was happy with my time, moving forward I feel that my times will only get better. I have a new passion and I'm happy while running, that will go a long way moving forward.
