Before the race began I was happy to see a decent sized crowd of about 40 people that would be competing, duathlons aren't huge events just yet. As the first 5k started I found myself going out way to fast as always, for the first 800 meters or so I was out in front with three other competitors. I quickly realized I needed to relax and dropped back to about 15th place and found my stride. As we made the turn at a mile and a half I decided that i didn't want to lose sight of the leaders. If I could do that I felt I could be in third place after the bike portion. I finished the first 5k strong and made a smooth transition to the bike, probably a little longer than others but I didn't lose much ground.
As I got on my bike I got bit by that bug, I love the bike. That was my first and is my true love. As I started on the 14 mile route I knew that I quickly hit 20mph and that I was going to do great while on the bike. Almost two miles in and I had passed almost ten people, in the bike portion we were grouped in with competitors from the triathlon so it was tough to gauge exactly how I was doing. I just wanted to pass as many people as I could. I felt so strong, I was whipping around corners and in my zone. As I was close to the end of lap one I could hear someone yelling "GO RYAN" I looked up and was happy to see Leanne and the kids in the car cheering me on. That gave me a little extra and I believe I completed the second lap faster than the first.
As I got off my bike to start the 5k something felt off, we all know it was my blood sugar. The second 5k was horrible, I want to say I completed it in 28 minutes. It was bad, I got passed by at least 7 people that were running the duathlon (duathletes were numbered in the 200s) Each time I got passed I tried to get the kick and it wasn't there. I would finish 11th which I'm not happy with, I left thinking about what could have been.
I really enjoyed the duathlon, I met some great people and I'm excited for my next duathlon. I wish they were a little more popular but I will do my best to find local duathlons. The results below are from the local paper and only have the local finishers.
