The cycling season is about ten months long, I follow the season very closely but two tours make the cycling season for me.  The first is the Tour de France and for obvious reasons, it is the biggest cycling race in the world with the best cyclists in the world.  Three weeks of cycling on the worlds biggest stage, it doesn't get much better than that.  The second race may come as a surprise to many, The Tour of California is the second can't miss bike race.  I feel as though the race is in my own backyard, even though it is taking place 3,000 miles away.  With a very star filled roster the Tour of California has cycling fans all over the world focusing on California and the beauty of the state.

Team Novo Nordisk has been a staple at the Tour of California for the past three years, this year Team Novo Nordisk rider Javier Megias is currently in 14th position just 1 minute and 39 seconds behind race leader Julian Alaphilippe.  With just two days left in the Tour of California a top ten finish is in sight for Javier.  Finishing in the tope ten will not be easy by any means.  As a person with huge dreams I'm holding out hope that Javier is on the podium Sunday when the tour comes to a close in Sacramento.  If I have learned anything from Team Novo Nordisk these past four years it is that you never give up and that anything is possible!!

With a couple of Team Novo Nordisk Cycling kits and a couple of Team Novo Nordisk dry wick shirts it is a rare occurance that I'm not racing or training in a team kit.  In 2012 I went on a minor shopping spree and bought these items because I believed so much in the team and their mission of inspiring, educating, and empowering people living with diabetes.  The belief in a team of cyclists, runners and triathletes living with diabetes has changed my life.  I have amazing opportunities in my life because of the team, they have taught me that things may not always happen the way that we hope but with a never say die approach the dream will be realized.  Each time I put on Team Novo Nordisk apparel I get a little adrenaline rush, this comes in very handy for those 530am runs or bike rides.  That adrenaline rush is due to the fact that a team of athletes living with diabetes is changing not only the diabetes world but the world in general.

This week the world is realizing that Team Novo Nordisk is not just a feel good story but a cycling team that belongs with the worlds best cyclists.  I can not put into words the pride that I feel as I'm watching Team Novo Nordisk on television, during the finish of the first stage on Sunday I sat in the bedroom cheering for Martijn Verschoor as he sprinted to a 5th place finish.  At the time my wife was in the living room with the kids, as I walked out she asked "Did they win?" I replied happily "No, but one of the riders finished 5th"  With a smile she would say "You didn't even cheer like that when the Broncos won the Super Bowl!!" (I've have a Broncos tattoo and have been a fan since I was 4)  All week as members of Team Novo Nordisk have been posting photos from the tour and sharing California news reports on the team I have had a smile on my face.  More and more people are starting to hear about and follow Team Novo Nordisk because of what they are doing on and off of the bike.

Above is what Team Novo Nordisk is all about!!  Founder and CEO of Team Novo Nordisk Phil Southerland was out for a ride before the start of a Tour of California stage and took the time to take a photo with a rider who has a neghbor living with diabetes.  I don't know the response from the gentleman's neighbor but I can promise you that his or her diabetes world changed with this photo and tweet.  Although Team Novo Nordisk is a few years away from the ultimate goal of the Tour de France it is already one of the best cycling teams in the world because of the people that work for the team.  It is about changing the world of diabetes and not just the bike.  Each and every member of the team take the time to engage with fans, if it is a fan living with diabetes they will take as much time to inspire, educate and empower the fan no matter the age.  The world has never seen a team like Team Novo Nordisk and this is just the beginning of the story.  I can't wait to see what Javier can do this weekend and I can't wait to see what the future holds for Team Novo Nordisk.  In four years you have changed thousands of lives, it won't be long until thousands is replaced with millions!!  From the millions living with diabetes thank you and we wish you the best of luck!!!
