You might be asking yourself where does the money that is raised go. Team Type 1 has a Global Ambassador Scholarship program that exclusively to athletes living with Type 1 diabetes. The scholarships are not just about sports, each student athlete that receives a scholarship is blessed to have amazing athletic ability but they also have diabetes and are role models for those living with diabetes all over the globe. Team Type 1 scholars give back to the diabetes community, they hold events at their colleges and speak at local schools sharing their story of a life with diabetes. The scholarship recipients pave the way for the next generation, they show what is possible with diabetes and each person is dedicated to changing diabetes.
Furthermore the money raised at this years event goes towards the Rwanda project. In Africa, seven out of eight children with diabetes die from the disease before being diagnosed, which plays a significant role in the seemingly low prevalence of Type 1 diabetes in the region. Health care professionals desperately need training in diagnostics and tools needed for patients. In Rwanda people with diabetes have a life expectancy of less then five years. Even those who are fortunate enough to live longer struggle every day to survive because of the lack of medical supplies. Much of the money raised next Friday night will go towards diabetes supplies as well as education for those living with diabetes in Rwanda.
“Our goal with Team Type 1 is to ensure sustainable access to medicine and tools for all people with diabetes.”- Phil Southerland
