Not A Good Start

The most difficult part of any race for me is the hour before the race begins.  An hour before the race I begin to stretch, test my blood sugar, and go for a warm up three mile jog.  If my blood sugar is off in anyway that makes the rest of the day very difficult.  Unfortunately yesterday was one of those times.  With a blood sugar of 270 I was feeling dehydrated and was disinterested in running.  Just an hour earlier I was at 70 and hoping to be around 200 when I began my pre race routine.  I clearly have to manage my pre race blood sugar a lot better moving forward.

With a blood sugar of 270 I decided to go on my warmup run in hopes of lowering my blood sugar, luckily the .5 units of insulin I had on board began to work.  After my warmup I was down to 212 and now worried about going to low while the race was in progress.  As the race began I felt very strong and was excited to be running.  My hope was to stay right around a 7:45 mile for the 5 mile race, that would put at a time of 37:25 which would be great.  My realistic goal was finishing under 40 minutes, after running the first two miles in 7:25 and 7:35 respectively my last three miles were right around the 8 minute mark.  My finishing time of 39:12 was under 40 minutes like I wanted but I feel I could have done better.

Finishing with a blood sugar of 91 was great but that number was not reached the way I would like, I was 91 because I took .5 units of insulin when I saw my blood sugar climbing about an hour and a half before the race.  Moving forward I will pay better attention to my blood sugar and try to start my races around 200 with no active insulin.  This weekend I have a 15 mile training run planned, this will be a great training run to see what I will do as far as insulin and food during races movinf forward.
