One member of my support team has been simply amazing, Delaine Wright has always been the one that I turn to when I have any questions or concerns when it comes to cycling or running. Eight years ago when just after my surgery I sat down with Delaine and her husband to learn about diabetes. At that time I had no clue about insulin pumps or how to cover any food that I would eat. Her support in the months after my surgery were amazing, Delaine is the one who taught me all about my Medtronic insulin pump. I can't imagine where I would be without the help that Delaine provided.
As I started to become an athlete living with diabetes, Dealine told me that I needed to buy the Diabetic Athlete's Handbook written by Sheri R. Colberg. Delaine spoke about how the book was a great guide for any athletic sport that I would do. When I purchased the book I was amazed at all of the information, the book talks about aerobic and anaerobic exercise and how each effect ones blood sugar. I felt that I had earned a PhD in diabetes management after reading the first few chapters, I learned how to hydrate and how to eat to be a successful athlete with diabetes. Since reading the book I have been in control of my diabetes while running or cycling, yes I have had a number of blood sugars out of range but those have been caused by not following instructions that the book has given. The Diabetic Athlete's Handbook is a must for anyone with diabetes!! It doesn't matter if you walk for fun or if you ride your bike across the country, this book helps with all of it.
