I had the chance to go to this years marathon to watch members of Team Novo Nordisk run the race. I may have had the chance to interview one or more of the team members before or after the race. A part of me is upset because I turned down that opportunity because of my own dream.
I'm a cyclist at heart, I love everything about the bike. Cycling and running are very different however, I love running because I can run with the pros. When it comes to cycling I have no chance what so ever to ride a stage of the Tour de France with members of Team Novo Nordisk when they are a part of the race in 2021. I ran the New York City half marathon and could have been running with Team Novo Nordisk member Stephen England as he paced racers aiming to finish around the 1hr 30 minute mark. That is what makes running so appealing for myself and so many others.
Running and cycling are metaphors for life, running and cycling are hard and so is life. You have some good moments and you have some bad but no matter what you work your ass off and you get to the finish line. I have two amazing children that have already seen how difficult life can be. My dream is to run the Boston Marathon the first time that they are old enough to attend the race and understand what it is all about. That could be in two or three years, whenever it is I will be running, I will have to do some fundraising to gain entry but it will be worth it.
I have the best father in the world, somehow someway I have to be better. I have a past that I'm not very proud of but like most parents I want to be a hero to my children. The only way I know how to do that is to run Boston because of its history and because of the challenge it presents to each and every runner that puts on a bib to run the course. It is a metaphor for life and is the best way I can teach my children to always work as hard as they can. Yes the bib and the medal will mean a lot to me when I finish but it will mean a lot more to my children when they're facing their own challenges.
I'm excited to follow the race on my phone this Monday. I have a lot of good friends and "teammates" running and wish them best. I also have to start training for the 2019 Boston Marathon I have to be at my best for two very special people!!
