Yesterday afternoon I was scheduled to change my pump site and decided having her help me might be a good idea. She has shown interest in the past and is always asking questions when my pump beeps. Insulin is still known as my medicine and when I test my blood sugar she knows what number we are hoping to see.
Yesterday she she took my old site off and examined the tubing and asking how it worked. She then went to the trash and threw everything away. She would then get the reservoir out and setup, I hooked it up to my medicine but she would get my medicine to the number two. She then remembered that the site had a needle and reminded me to be careful while I took it out. She would help prepare the pump and took out the needle once the new site was in my body.
Knowledge is power and when my five year old daughter can change my pump site and know what a blood sugar of 200 means I know that when it comes to teaching her about diabetes I’m doing something right. She is an amazing young lady and impresses kate and I each and every day!!
