Living Low

Once again my blood sugar was running lower thanks to another workday that involved a chainsaw and a lot of tree work.  What I want to talk about is the dramatic drop in blood sugar right around 6am.

I was very happy to see that my blood sugar was hovering right around 150 while I was asleep, being low at anytime when I'm sleeping is never good.  Easy Ed vibrated at 4:35, it's weird how you remember every little diabetes moment when you're half asleep.  My blood sugar was at 154 and had the slight up arrow, in five seconds I decided to give myself two units of insulin.  It is crazy how quick the brain works even when you're half asleep, I knew that my blood sugar was rising and that I didn't want to wake up above 120.  I also knew that I had to be up in an hour and that if the insulin did make my blood sugar go down that I would be awake when it started to get low.  For many this probably wasn't the best diabetic decision, again this is me and what I feel works best, I don't encourage anyone to use my diabetes practices.  When I woke up fully at 540am my blood sugar was at 70, I couldn't be happier.  Looking at how quickly a bowl of Grape Nuts Flakes raised my blood sugar I'm glad I took some insulin at 4am.

If I had not taken any insulin I would have woken up between 150-200 the cereal would then raise my blood sugar to the 300 range, I can't have that!!  My methods may be unorthodox but they are working so far.  When I begin to ride my bike in to work in April I will want my blood sugar to be at 150 at 5am so I can ride in to work with no problems. I love that about diabetes, I love that each day is different and challenging.  I embrace that challenge and will enjoy my recent success for as long as it lasts.
