Juice Battle

Ever since I was diagnosed I was always told that juice will fix a low blood sugar and for almost 23 years I have been using apple juice to fix any low.  For the past five years the juice has been working but an 8oz glass would get my blood sugar from a reading of 60 to a reading 70 and that was it.  I would have to rely on food to raise it a little bit more.  The past two weeks that has all changed, a glass of apple juice will spike me quickly to about 200 as you can see above.  It doesn't matter the time of day, apple juice is quickly becoming a bad low blood sugar fix.

This morning, yes I know that being low at 4am is not good, I awoke with a blood sugar of 70.  I took one sip of apple juice aka a shot and had my breakfast which I covered with three units of insulin.  The result was great, topped at 150 and came back down an hour later.  For that low I tried a glass of apple juice and a granola bar, my blood sugar quickly took off to 250!!!  What better way to over react than by taking three units of insulin and being low just before lunch!!  I learned my lesson and avoided apple juice to fix the low and the results speak for themselves.

I don't know what has caused the recent spikes from apple juice but for the forseeable future I will be staying away from juice to fix a blood sugar that is between 60 and 70.  Anything below 60 and a small amount will be needed, I need to get off of the blood sugar roller coaster and getting rid of juice may be the answer.
