In 2013 Team Novo Nordisk changed the cycling world forever, Team Novo Nordisk is the first cycling team at any level to be comprised of athletes that are living with diabetes!! That in it's own makes the team very special and very inspirational to so many around the world that are living with diabetes.
Team Novo Nordisk has built quite the fan base in two short years. As the team has competed all across the globe people have taken notice, the team is now being interviewed by the biggest cycling reporters across the globe. The news reporters have come and have run pieces on the cycling team that is racing with diabetes to inspire, educate and empower people affected by diabetes.
With all of the coverage that Team Novo Nordisk has received you would think that they are doing it for themselves to help the team race in the 2021 Tour de France. Anyone that would think that is living in a dream world, the video above shows what Team Novo Nordisk is all about. It's not about the bike, it is about diabetes and changing the world for anyone and everyone that is living with diabetes. The first time that I watched the video above I cried, I know how difficult living with diabetes can be. I'm very fortunate to live in a great country that makes access to the best diabetes medicine and technology very easy. Not everyone that is living with diabetes is so lucky, sometimes life will challenge us and you are left wondering how you are going to make it from day to day.
Each and every member of Team Novo Nordisk has had a challenge in his or her life when it comes to diabetes. Just because they are professional athletes doesn't mean that living with diabetes is easier. Knowing what diabetes is all about makes team members that much more of a role model for anyone that is living with diabetes. To help a family that has two children living with diabetes is amazing. In the video when riders speak about building a house for the family you can hear in their voices that they are emotional. They care about this family, they are not actors they didn't receive any money for what they did. The members of the team will be in contact with this family, do I have inside information that tells me this? I do not. Knowing a couple of the Team Novo Nordisk running team members I know that each and every member of Team Novo Nordisk cares about each and every fan that they meet. I don't know what the future holds when it comes to racing for Team Novo Nordisk but I do know that when a team member wins a stage race that they will contact the Sanchez family and say thank you. Each member of the team was changed when they built the house for this family, it is something that they will never forget and something that will be with them when they are on the bike and every muscle hurts and they can't breathe. The Sanchez family will get each rider to the finish, I strongly believe that Team Novo Nordisk will dedicate the 2016 season to the Sanchez family.
Team Novo Nordisk has saved so many lives all over the world. They have saved my life, they have proven that anything is possible with diabetes. With so much confidence in my diabetes management I have been able to become a somewhat decent cyclist and runner. That is all well and good but Team Novo Nordisk has made me a better person by teaching me that sharing my story and talking to children living with diabetes is the most important thing that we can do as people living with diabetes. As adults we know that people don't think diabetes is weird or that we are "different". Children living with diabetes need to know that they can do anything with diabetes, that a diabetes diagnosis is not a death sentence. My generation was told that we wouldn't live to 30 because of diabetes, we are still here and we are showing that anything is possible with diabetes. It is time for us to change diabetes for the next generation, we owe it to our children and our children's children to make life better for anyone living with diabetes.
Thank you to each and every member of Team Novo Nordisk, you have changed the diabetes world. You are an inspiration to millions and we are all cheering for you and can't wait to see you reach your goals as cyclists and as people that are living with diabetes. You are an inspiration to all of us and we wish you the best moving forward!!
