Today it cost almost two hundred dollars for 200 test strips, I also received a bunch of pump supplies that cost close to $1,500. Seeing these prices I couldn't help but think about what someone without insurance must do to live. I believe that it is very difficult to live successfully as a diabetic without insurance, however people do. I'm very lucky to have the insurance coverage that I do, but every time I get a prescription i can't help but feel for those paying out of pocket.
What makes me feel even worse is that I have a lot of extra supplies, my pharmacy refills my prescriptions automatically so I have almost 400 strips in my house right now. Yes these strips will eventually be used but I would be much happier if I could donate my extra supplies to someone that can't afford supplies. I know that this is highly illegal but I don't see how giving someone test strips is harmful to either person involved. I have seen a few posts on Facebook about people asking for insulin pump supplies such as these. I get that trading prescriptions is highly illegal but wish that i could do something to help those without insurrance. I will be looking for ways to help and would love to hear some suggestions if anyone has any.
