On Monday my job got a lot better as one of my favorite diabetic friends, John Pacitti, returned to work!! John is an amazing person and just makes work better with his positive attitude. If he wasn't a diabetic I have a feeling I would have the same friendship with him. I'm happy that my diabetes coworker is back, it changes my workday. It makes breaks and lunch that much better because I have someone challenging me. I hate when I have a higher blood sugar than him at break or lunch because he loves to brag when he beats me. That competition makes us better, we will sit and talk about why our blood sugar was high, low, or perfect. We discuss what we could have done differently and how we will handle our break snack, will we take insulin or will we have our break and know that we don't need any insulin.
Having a diabetic coworker changes everything and I believe that everyone should have a diabetic coworker. Think about it, we all want that perfect 120 blood sugar when we sit down for lunch. More often than not we will shrug off a blood sugar that is higher than normal, we will take insulin to correct it but we won't dwell on it. Having a diabetic coworker holds you accountable, I can tell other coworkers that I was 220 at lunch and they'll say "Thats a bit high" and go on with their day. When you have a diabetic coworker they get to why you were 220 and have suggestions to make sure that it will not happen again.
I know that I'm lucky to have John as a coworker and will miss him dearly when he heads to his "real job" in a couple weeks. I think that him and I will concoct some crazy competition so that we can talk crap to each other. We are odd people but it works for us when it comes to diabetes and that is the key, you have to find a way to challenge yourself as a diabetic!!
