Dialed In

On very rare occasions you hear athletes say that they were just in the zone.  They say that they saw every play or pitch perfectly and hitting a shot or a baseball was effortless.  I'm happy to report that I had one of those days today. My sugars literally did not move today!! My pump just now went over 115 for the first time in five hours.  Every time that I tested I was around 100!!  Days like this are rare but when they happen I can't explain how happy they make me.  Today I began to get my diet back to more cyclist themed diet.  Starting in February I will be on the bike three to four times a week and gradually increasing the miles I ride.  This week seemed like the perfect time to go back to my cycling diet which involves eating more protein, carbohydrates and as many fruits and vegetables as I can.  I'm not saying my diet the past month was bad, but I did consume more processed foods then I would when I'm cycling daily.  I will miss the Christmas cookies and desserts but those won't help me ride my bike across New England in July.

My breakfast will shift from cereal to egg whites and two pieces of whole grain toast with peanut butter.  Today I covered that with two units of insulin and had no problems.  A snack around ten will be either an apple, banana, grapes or blueberries coupled with a Greek yogurt.  I will usually give myself one unit to cover the snack.  My lunch will go from having deli meats and cheeses to a piece of fish or chicken along with brown rice and a spinach salad.  Again anywhere from two to three units will cover lunch.  Today I didn't give any insulin because I would be on the bike an hour after lunch.  My dinners will for the most part stay the same.  They will consist of high carbohydrates that are found in pastas and grains.  A lot of vegetables and fruit will be consumed as well.  Tonight I gave myself two units before dinner and three units forty five minutes later.

As boring as my diet sounds, today proved that it helps me control my diabetes a lot better.  Will I still have peaks and valleys in my blood sugars, yes but they will be far fewer and if that’s the case I can’t complain.  The change in diet also means I will probably be consuming water when others are having full meals well at restaurants or  are eating at times that are inconvenient for my schedule.  I know that this is not easy for the people that I will be around when they are eating but I hope they understand why I’m not eating.  To be perfectly honest it is very tough to not eat when everyone around you is eating a delicious home cooked meal.  In no way am I sitting around in depression because I can't have a cheeseburger or a cookie.  I will consume some goodies when the urge strikes but I need to have the strength to make them rewards and not everyday occurrences.
