This wasn't always the case however, in my ten years of not taking care of myself I consumed a lot of alcohol for five of those years. I did so because I had nothing to going for me and the people close to me drank heavily so to fit in I did as well. In that time I obviously was not testing my blood sugar or was I aware of what alcohol could do to my blood sugars. Today I don't know how a beer or drink will affect my blood sugar, I don't drink so I never felt the need to really research how alcohol will affect my body. As an athlete I absolutely hate alcohol. I know hate is a very strong word but I get so angry when I see people cancelling their workouts by drinking a lot of beer. Just this morning I saw a post on Facebook that read, "Enjoying a much deserved bloody mary after our 12 mile bike ride this morning." Why do they feel they earned a drink for working out? It makes no sense to me, why do people cancel a workout with alcohol. If I posted, I just rode ten miles I think I'm going to eat a large pizza people would laugh at me. To me drinking because you worked out is the same thing. The NCAA has amazing articles on alcohol and athletics, click here to read the articles.
I believe that each person has the right to do whatever they want when it comes to alcohol. I just wish people would not give me crap for not drinking. As I said earlier I work way to hard to get all that I can out of every workout that I do, I don't want to cancel it out by drinking. As the holiday weekend continues I encourage everyone to be careful while at parties, know your limits and if you have been drinking make sure to find a designated driver.
