Tailgating would be a tougher opponent for me, I did have a slight advantage however. We decided to go to a small sports bar a few miles from the stadium so we could stay warm, I couldn't have been happier. My mind was in football food mode, I was craving wings and potato skins, strange yes but that is football food to me. I wasn't worried about the wings but was very nervous while I ate a couple potato skins, much like the Patriots they wouldn't be a threat until the second half.
The cold was the problem, once we parked we headed out on a one mile walk to the stadium, I thought great a walk that will help my hands and feet stay warm. The good news is my hands and feet did great, but the wind and cold did a number on my face. You know it is cold when your eyes hurt from the cold, this was a first but my eyes honestly hurt from the cold. Once the game started my diabetes battle began, I was very lucky to have a good friend with me that told me to test once we got to our seats. As I sat he said "Why don't you check your sugar, I'm sure those skins are kicking your butt" Smart guy make it a challenge so you know I will test, I was at 134 and very happy. The only problem was that I had three units of insulin active. As the Broncos started to dominate I was happy and decided to grab my usual pretzel and a diet soda. I was doing so well why not ruin it with a pretzel.
The first half ended and my hands and feet were icicles. Luckily everyone we were with was heading back to the car, I was nervous about leaving but decided it is better to be warm than to torture my body, my blood sugar was at 163 when we got to the car. As the Patriots started to mount a comeback so did my blood sugar, like the Broncos I would end up losing after playing a decent game. The skins and pretzel caught up to me and I was 302 when i arrived home, my pump read 167. Things happen, I had a great night and one bad blood sugar isn't going to ruin my night. I was obviously a bit pissed but took insulin to fix the high and was feeling great when i woke up at 137 this morning.
