As the JV was being played I felt great, as the game came to an end I ran to my diabetes bag and tested. My blood sugar was at 286, I was very upset, how could I feel so great and have a blood sugar that high. I decided to take four units of insulin, as I got ready for the varsity game I decided to purchase a bag of skittles just in case I got low. During the varsity game I felt low a couple of times and picked away at the skittles, post game again I returned to my diabetes bag and tested. 324 this time, I blamed the skittles I had just eaten. I did have a sense that my pump site was not working however, I decided to take another five units to see what happens.
Arriving home at 10pm I tested yet again and was at 312, at this point I had enough. I grabbed my humalog pen and took eight units to get my blood sugar down. Of course at 2am I woke up and was covered in sweat!! I was down to 49, I knew that this would happen but I did not expect the weird low symptoms. Before testing I laid in bed for ten minutes talking to myself about the olympics, I was laying down thinking how cool it must be to compete at that level, I would then wonder why I was covered in sweat and then think about how difficult it is to ice skate, then again why am I not under the covers? I finally got up, I pigged out and was happy to wakeup with a blood sugar of 212.
I changed my site last night and everything is running smoothly, I get another chance to have a good blood sugar during the basketball games this evening. I'm very happy that I will be receiving my new dexcom sites early next week, I miss my CGM. I hate nights like the one I had last night, I'm lucky they are few and far between, but I wish they didn't exist.
