Last night after a nice dinner with close friends I told them that I was looking to run my 5k in less than 23 minutes. Mentally I felt that I should be right around 23 minutes as I start to log more miles. Right now my big spring race is a half marathon in the beginning of May, I'd like to have my 5k time down to 22 minutes on May 1st. Today I had a good feeling as I drove to the race, mentally I was very focused and I felt great with a blood sugar of 180 just before the race began. I made sure I arrived an hour early so that I could warmup on the course before the actual race, I love to know what the course is like before I run. As the race began I could tell that I would have a good run, I started slower as planned and had plenty in the tank as I hit the two mile marker. I knew that just after mile two was a good size hill, I kicked it in to another gear as I hit the hill and made up a lot of ground and found a runner that I would pace myself off of for the next mile. As this runner and I hit mile three we both began our kick, as we approached the school his friends who had already finished began to yell at him and he was in a full out sprint. I decided to try and sprint but was quickly dropped, today I had my ass handed to me by an 18 year old!! Other than feeling old I was very satisfied with my time and how great I felt for the entire race.
Post race I quickly ran to the car and tested my blood sugar, my CGM site needed to be changed right when the started. I thought I would have been able to sneak the race in but I was wrong. Nothing like the CGM beeping and people giving me odd looks at the start line. Post race my blood sugar was at 142 and I was feeling great!! I have a feeling that my spring running season is going to be getting better moving forward!!
