What I found was the Westerly Track and Athletic Club (WTAC). The club puts on the fun runs and numerous other runs in the town of Westerly. Members of the track and athletic club would become like family members in the summer of 2013. Many members of the club have run marathons and a few are very strong runners and have qualified for Boston many many times. Not only did the members of the WTAC make me a better runner they taught me about the brotherhood of running.
Each and every Wednesday in the summer of 2013 I would warmup with members of the WTAC and pick their brains. I was like a child, I wanted to know everything!! How do you run and looked so relaxed? How do you control your breathing? How do you run up and downhill? How do I stop from going out so fast? I asked them question after question and they answered each and everyone I threw at them.
I have been a member of the WTAC since 2013 and the members are like family now. I may or may not spend about thirty minutes at the grocery store talking to a fellow member about our favorite trails to run. At any local race I will talk to members of the WTAC about the upcoming race and the races they plan on running later in the season. The members of WTAC are like family and to have their support means so much to me as I train to run the Chicago Marathon.
Mile 5 will be a fun mile but it will also be a mile that I make sure my pace, breathing and heart rate are right where they should be. If it wasn't for all the great members of the WTAC I'd be that guy running mile five at a fast pace and then walking at mile 20 because I have nothing left in the tank. Thank you each and every member of the WTAC you are amazing and have helped me so much as not only a runner but as a person and that means the world to me.
