Mile 12 is for one special cyclist living with diabetes. Zander Heden Mortensen Kristofferson has been an inspiration for myself and so many others since his diagnosis. At the time of his diagnosis Zander was only 13 years old. Thinking back to the age of 13 I strongly believe many of us would be in denial and upset with a diabetes diagnosis. Zander has said that he felt that for about a week until he remembered Team Novo Nordisk. Since then Zander has been on his bike and changing the diabetes world.
Talking to Zander on Facebook and following him on social media you can see the passion that he has for life. Zander is now 16 and living life to the fullest. He is on the bike and recently attended the Talent ID camp held by Team Novo Nordisk in Athens, Georgia.
To take control of his diabetes at such a young age tells you all you need to know about Zander. To be so determined and mature at such a young age speaks volumes. To see Zander in such a great position as an athlete living with diabetes brings a smile to my face, being on the other side when I was Zanders age I know how easy it could be to sit at home and ask "why me?" Zanders never stop working to improve attitude will be with me as I hit the 12 mile marker in Chicago. Instead of thinking about how much of the race I have left I will be thinking about all that I have done to get to that point.I can't thank Zander enough for the inspiration!!
