Back With a Vengeance

You can learn a lot in a week.  After a week without my Dexcom (Easy Ed), I felt lost, I missed having my blood sugar in my pocket 24/7.  I need to be in charge of my diabetes and when I'm without Easy Ed, I'm not in charge of my diabetes.  I did learn a lot in the seven days that I was without Easy Ed.  I learned that although Easy Ed is very accurate, I need to test my blood sugar a lot more.  Often times before my morning break or lunch at work I would just peak at my blood sugar rather than testing.  When I was without Easy Ed I had to test, I need to continue testing even though I have Easy Ed with me.  Testing my blood sugar can't hurt me it can only help, not testing my blood sugar can only hurt me.  I need to remember this moving forward.

Going in to my work week I decided to try a couple of new things.  When it comes to my diabetes and work I have two big problems.  The first problem is that I always spike around 7am about an hour after breakfast.  The second problem is that I put a lot of empty calories in to my body because my blood sugar stays around 80 for hours on end while working.

To try and fix the post breakfast spike I have decided to act like a kid.  Three to four times a week I will have a bowl of cereal for breakfast, the other days I go with eggs and some toast.  The blood sugar spike does not happen when I have eggs and toast due to the low carb breakfast.  To try and fix the cereal dilemma I have turned in to a kid by buying these!!!  No more big bowls of cereal, I now have 100 calorie boxes that only have 25 grams of carbs!!  I know how to cover 25 carbs with insulin, I don't know how to take insulin for larger portions as shown above!!

My second problem will be a bit tougher to solve.  Last night while doing the shopping I was tempted to buy maple syrup or honey to put in to this.  I decided on honey, that is 17g of carbs in one tablespoon!!  An average squeeze of my GU gel bottle gives me about 40 carbs!!  That is plenty of carbs to raise my blood sugar quickly and allow me to keep working until break or lunch.  This simple idea also cuts almost 300 calories!!!  This morning before lunch I was feeling low and took a shot of honey, it tasted like absolute garbage but in minutes my blood sugar bounced back and I was no longer feeling angry aka low.  I'm not sure if this will work all season long but I really hope that it does!!
