As my partial vegetarianism was learned by people around me I got a lot of odd reactions. The most common is “What’s wrong with you, how can you not eat meat?” The answer is I did some research and saw that meat although a bit beneficial in that it provides iron and B12 to your body it is also loaded with saturated or bad fat. I don’t need that in my diet so I simply gave it up. When I did I felt a lot better, I had a lot more energy. Today my diet consists of a lot of fruit, vegetables and grains. I try to put good food in so that I feel good. I’m not perfect I cheat here and there but I make myself earn it. After I do any one hundred mile bike ride I go straight for a Little Debbie Zebra Cake. Pre diabetes I ate them a lot!! I love them, it’s my food weakness. I enjoy them after a long ride and it makes me go back to the joys and simplicity of childhood for a minute. Once the cake is gone its right back to getting the good food in my body. I don’t miss junk food; I have been without it for so long that if I do have a little bit it honestly doesn’t taste good.
So where is this blog going?? Today I stumbled upon an article that almost made sick when I read it. The article is not for the weak of heart but here is the link http://www.snopes.com/food/prepare/msm.asp
When I finished reading the article I was very angry. How is it that this kind of food is approved for human consumption!!! This is one article on one kind of food. What is really going in to our bodies? For years people have been blaming the rise in obesity on technology. Kids don’t go outside and play, the internet and gaming systems have made them lazy. We are just now getting to the real cause of the problem. What is in our food?? If they are doing this to chicken a food consumed by all most every American what other foods are they doing this to? You may be saying to yourself come on Ryan everyone knows that fast food is not good for them. That may be the case but when you get down to what is in the food how can anyone serve this to the general public?
The same food that the article talks about is served in almost every American school!!! Children are getting food that is “fake”. As Americans we have begun to attack every fast food company we can find but the same food is served in schools and nobody says a thing. If you look at the process it is a never ending cycle. A child gets chicken nuggets and fries at school maybe twice a month. The child likes the food because it tastes good. The parents try to push healthy foods but in the end have no success. A child wants the food that is “fake” and loaded with preservatives and who knows what. As the child goes in to high school the place to go after school and school functions is a fast food restaurant. As adults they think hey I’ve been eating this food my whole life and I’m doing ok, if they’re running late they decide to stop at a fast food restaurant and grab dinner for the family. I’m sure a lot of the foods in supermarkets are the same way, who knows what is really in our cereal, milk, cookies, soup or our frozen foods.
This blog was written of one article and some facts that I have learned over time. This is my opinion but I think vegans and people that only eat all natural foods have it right. I know that all though my diet seems to be good I will spend a lot more time looking at what really is in my food.
