As an eighteen year old working at a golf course in my hometown I figured I would be working with kids that I went to high school with. A family from Warwick (about thirty minutes away) worked at the course and I can't imagine my life if I had never met members of this family. John Cavanagh was a sixteen year old man when he and I first started working together. Paired together on his first day he and I would not say to much but after an hour or so I liked the kid because he had a work ethic like no other. He was also one of the most genuine people that I had ever met, he cared about me and my diabetes even when I did not. He was always asking if I was ok and if I needed anything. He could tell I was not taking care of myself and wanted to help.
As time went on John and I formed quite the friendship, Leanne and I would go to his hockey games at Providence College and sit with his family, in fact during those seasons Johns family was kind of my third family. Win or lose John would always be himself after games when we would all go to dinner, John loves hockey but loves life and his family so much more.
When I got sick John and I would work together the following fall and that is when everything changed. Sitting out on the course hitting golf balls when we should have been working John asked me "You seem better, are you doing ok? You know diabetes wise and stuff." I almost started crying before he finished the sentence, this was the first person other than true family to ask me if I was ok. He and I would talk for an hour or two and he asked question after question eventually getting to the reason I never took care of myself. From that day on John has been like a brother to me, knowing that I can call or text John whenever I need a laugh or have a question he is there and that means so much.
Mile seven is for the man, the myth, the legend John Cav aka LJ. Having that true friend that would be there no matter what and no matter when means the world to me. I know that he will be following my progress while I'm running the marathon and I know he will be texting me randomly leading up to the marathon saying "I expect mile 7 to be your fastest!!" I'm not sure if mile 7 will be the fastest but I will make sure that Magical Mystery Tour by The Beatles will be playing. I'm not sure if my eyes will be closed during mile 7 but it could add some excitement to the race. (Inside jokes are the best jokes!!)
