While meeting with the surgeon a lot of questions were asked, for the blog I will only cover the diabetes and racing questions that I asked. First of all having the best insulin pump, I asked if I could wear it while being operated on. This is huge for me, this pump has been doing the work and keeping my blood sugars in range all day and night. I will meet with the surgeon again for a pre op meeting, I will have a more definite answer then but it looks like I will be able to wear the pump and CGM while being operated on. This will make the recovery a little better and ease my worries about my blood sugar after the surgery.
The major questions were asked and I will be able to return a normal life after a few months. Most importantly this means I will be at my best when I'm with my children and Kate. If I couldn't be myself post surgery I would've found another way to get everything back where it should be.
As an athlete I almost started crying while I tried to find a way to postpone my NYC half marathon entry until 2019. This is the first time I have ever had to pull out of a race. It is for a legit reason but it honestly hurts, I was looking for the half marathon to be my fight back to racing. I was so excited about the new route and seeing the man that turned me into a runner. I was excited to shop in Times Square with Kate, I was excited to meet my brother for lunch after the race and have a milkshake. That is all gone now, yes it will return in 2019 but it still hurts. Also I will not be returning to do a 50k and a miler will not be run this fall. Again, that all hurts but I will be able to run and ride a bike after I recover which was a huge concern for me.
Kate and I are looking at half marathons to run in October, that will be my return and I'm already thinking about setting a new PR. I will come back stronger and better. I have an amazing team in place and will fight like hell to get better and be back to my goofy self as soon as possible. For now I get to do nothing which is already making me go a little crazy. If anyone needs a basketball coach, diabetes know it all, sports fanatic, or social media nerd for the next few months let me know. I can't lift anything or do much but if I can sit and walk around a little I'm all in.
