Another Interesting Diabetes Day

Waking up just before seven this morning I was a little worried about testing my blood sugar before breakfast.  I woke up around two in the morning feeling a bit off.  I had ridden on the trainer last night from eight until nine.  That was the best way for me to forget about the tough loss the basketball team had suffered.  My blood sugar was 230 around ten pm just before I got ready for bed.  I gave myself two units and had a feeling I’d be awake at some point in the night.  My blood sugar was sixty-five when I tested at two am, I had a feeling I was dropping so I had some apple juice and a bowl of Special K which I covered with two units.  When I tested before breakfast my blood sugar was 251.  I knew I was going to see a bad number but it still made me angry.  I had to be at the gym for eight but still had to eat and take insulin.  The amount of insulin I would take was a total guess, I knew I was having cereal a simple food to cover but I also was going to work out for an hour.  I decided to go with 2.9 units; I wanted to be below 150 when I was working out.  Working out with a blood sugar above 200 doesn’t feel right, my muscles seem weaker and the normal kick butt attitude I have is not there.

Luckily I felt really good on the diabetes side when I worked out what was off was that my inner thighs were weak.  They felt off all weekend but I thought it was from the increased weight on the squats.  As I began to do deadlifts I knew that I wouldn’t be able to complete the set number of reps that I was given.  Luckily my trainer tweaked the workout so the legs could heal but also get a little work.  My workout included single leg squats, seated rows, single arm rows and lunges.  All of the exercises done with less weight with anywhere from fifteen to twenty reps.

When I returned home around ten I quickly ran upstairs to test and was very happy to see that my blood sugar was 146.  I thought to myself damn I got lucky.  Guessing how my body would react to a workout and insulin is a crap shoot.  I don’t like having to guess on insulin but it does happen from time to time.  When it does happen I make it a point to have more sugary drinks and glucose tablets around just in case the insulin does to much and I’m low.  Testing again before lunch I was 92, I felt good as I prepared a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, twelve almonds (yes I made sure to count), a Greek yogurt and a nutter butter cookie.  Yeah the cookie came out of nowhere, it was left in a Ziploc bag that my wife forgot to put in her lunch, when I saw it I couldn’t pass it up.  I haven’t had one in years, I needed my cookie fix!!!  I gave myself 3.9 units and enjoyed my lunch.

The rest of my afternoon would consist of fixing the garage door, getting a haircut and calling a doctor at URI.  Nothing to strenuous but all things that needed to get done.  The best part was the call to the doctor at URI.  One of my diabetes buddies who has done more than I can ever ask to get me where I am today used her connections to connect the doctor and I.  I talked to him for a while about diabetes and about cycling.  He was more than happy to setup a day where I could have my VO2 max and lactic threshold measured.  I’m looking forward to the test, I’m a bit nervous about how I will do but I think all of the training and cycling will make it so my numbers are good.  I have included a link that explains what each test does and how it is performed.  I have also included a you tube video of a cycling VO2 max test being performed.  I won’t even try to explain them myself, I don’t think that I could.
