After moving a few years back and getting a lot stronger my morning ride to work can still be ten miles. What fun is that though? How am I challenging myself, how am I getting better? The truth is I wouldn't, I decided I would change the route to a twenty mile route and still aim for the 20mph goal. That means I have to wake up at 430am, make sure that my blood sugar is good and have a small breakfast all before 5:15am. Compared to riding the route it is tougher having the right blood sugar, breakfast and getting up. I'm often asked why I do it, the truth is because once I get on the bike I'm truly happy and love the challenge that I have in front of me.
Yesterday I jumped on the bike as a cool but breath taking morning was waiting for me. I would begin my ride but have to stop to get a photo of the amazing view which is above. After that I was going like a mad man on the bike, when I hit my first 5 mile split in a time of 14:50 I thought hmm this is a great start I wonder if I can hit the 20mph goal. Split 2 in a time of 15:04, still averaging 20mph though so I felt good. As I continued and hit mile 15 I noticed that I was feeling strong and that my breathing was relaxed. Usually I have short deep breaths, yesterday it was long calm breaths. My legs felt amazing, every stroke of the pedals felt smooth even though I was in high gears. Split three was done in a time of 14:30, it seemed like I would finally reach my goal. The last five miles had some minor hills that are quick leg and chest burners. The hills did their job as I was winded and sore as I hit the final mile. That final mile felt like it lasted ten minutes, pushing like crazy as my watch beeped I looked down and finished in a time of 59:52. That was it I had reached my goal, but then decided I could get another mile in because I was early to work. Just like mile twenty mile twenty-one was a suffer fest, it was an all out sprint. As I got to the entrance at the golf course where I worked I hit stop on the watch and hunched over hoping I had kept the 20mph pace.
Now that I have reached my goal I will enjoy it but I will now make that route a 25 mile route and push for a 20mph average. It is great to reach a goal but the challenge is better.
