A Message of Hope

Not only can members of Team Novo Nordisk ride bikes at the highest levels, they can manage their diabetes and they have a true passion for changing diabetes.  After hearing Ben Dilley speak about the numbers behind diabetes and what they have seen while racing in Africa, I was brought to tears.  We hear about the bad side of diabetes and how rough it is in third world countries but this video made everything real for me.

I have insurance that covers a majority of my diabetes supplies and yet I complain when the insurance company messes up and I may have to pay out of pocket.  I have fresh water whenever I need it, I have a pump and glucose meter.  These are everyday things that we take for granted, I had everything that I needed at my disposal and I didn't use a glucose meter, test strips or my doctor for ten years.  Not a day goes by that I don't think about that, it pains me daily to think that I lived and others that would have used all of the supplies did not live.  That thought has made me who I am today, I know people often get sick of my positive thinking and motivation but I'm just happy to be alive.  Diabetes is a horrible disease, we all know that, we need to stop complaining about it and look at what it does for us as people.

Team Novo Nordisk has made diabetes cool for me and done the same for people all over the globe.  I often write about how they are racing all over the world and how bad I want them to race in the Tour de France in 202.  What I don't write about as much as I should is the work that they do all over the globe to make diabetes care better, they give people everywhere supplies such as insulin and glucose meters so they can live better lives with diabetes.  At the end of the day the members of Team Novo Nordisk are normal people like you and me, they have the same highs and lows when it comes to blood sugar.  What makes them different is that they know they have amazing athletic ability that allows them to ride, run or swim with diabetes and change the diabetic landscape.  Phil Southerland has changed diabetes for me and on this last day of National Diabetes Month I would like to say thank you to not only Mr. Southerland but to every member of Team Novo Nordisk, thank you for saving my life and thank you for doing the same for everyone all over the world that lives with diabetes.
