This morning as I was checking my email and social media while on my break I noticed that a number of Team Novo Nordisk members were posting an article about Team Novo Nordisk member Thomas Raeymaekers.  The offical press release from Team Novo Nordisk is below.  As I read the article I was sad and felt bad for Thomas, I mean imagine realizing your dream and then having that taken away from you.  You're living with diabetes and doing amazing things and then another disease takes it all away.  I don't know how I would react but I have an idea that many of us would be so distraught that it would take us months if not years to get back on our feet to chase a new dream.

The Team Novo Nordisk family is there for Thomas, this retirement is just bike related.  His Novo Nordisk family will help him, I have a feeling he will be at all the races that Team Novo Nordisk participates in.  Team Novo Nordisk is a family and they will continue to do all that they can for Thomas.  It will be tough for Thomas to watch his cycling family race knowing that he should be out there but at the same time he is out there with them.  When a member of the Novo Nordisk team is affected by something they all are.  The team will be driven to get on the podium for Thomas.

Thomas will continue to change diabetes, his words of advice and sharing his personal story will inspire and help millions all over the world living with diabetes and those living with Crohn's disease.

Team Novo Nordisk's Thomas Raeymaekers Announces Retirement‏

Atlanta, GA — In the middle of his third professional season, Belgian Thomas Raeymaekers will retire from racing to treat ongoing health issues related to Crohn’s disease, a condition he was diagnosed with earlier this year.

Raeymaekers, one of Team Novo Nordisk’s youngest riders, will assume a new role with the team as an athlete ambassador, supporting the team’s outreach efforts around world and showing other athletes living with diabetes what may be possible.

“It was my lifelong dream to race professionally and I was able to fulfill that dream as a member of Team Novo Nordisk,” said Raeymaekers. “While my career has been cut unexpectedly short, I look forward to remaining part of the team and continuing to help inspire, educate and empower the 387 million people around the world affected by diabetes.”

“As a professional team, we lose a fierce competitor who thrived in tough conditions and left every ounce he had on the road; but as an organization, we gain a tremendous ambassador who will play an equally important role,” said Team Novo Nordisk CEO and co-founder, Phil Southerland. “Thomas is an athlete who doesn't let diabetes stop him from pursuing his dreams on or off the bike and he is an inspiration to many.”
