Stephen England is a runner for Team Novo Nordisk that has been like a big brother for me. Since meeting Stephen I have transformed myself as an athlete. I was a cyclist that had the legs with veins popping out and the muscular look, now I have the body of a runner and it is because of Stephen. He probably didn't mean to but he challenged and motivated me to become an ultra runner. The stories he shared with me changed my view of what pain really is and just how far we can push our bodies physically and mentally. After running my first 50k I of course called Kate telling her I had finished and thanking her for all the help. The next person was Stephen, I was brought to tears at the end of the race and had to thank the man that made it possible. It is a simple saying but when Stephen said he has never dropped out of race because "I can't quit diabetes why would I quit a race" it changed my view of the world. Things are tough and will cause you pain but it's not going to kill you, no matter the pain, never ever give up!!
In July, Stephen headed down south to run in some kind of crazy race. I mean that's his job, he also runs so much I can't recall what race he ran. As always Stephen made time for others and didn't worry about himself. He stopped in Alabama and spoke to the campers at Camp Sugar Falls. Camp Sugar Falls is a camp for children with diabetes operated by Southeastern Diabetes Education Services. The camp provides a fun and adventurous outdoor setting for campers where they can enjoy a variety of recreational activities. Counselors and medical staff who are knowledgeable about diabetes and how to live a full and active life while managing diabetes help work with the campers to encourage a positive approach to living with diabetes. Additionally, campers create new friendships with their peers who are also managing their diabetes as well.
From the picture above you can see the impact that Stephen had on these young men and women living with diabetes. Stephen makes sure that those living with diabetes can do anything that they put their mind too. Stephen runs wwith a passion but that is nothing to when he speaks about diabetes. You know that he cares and that he is not just speaking because he has too. It is this passion that makes Stephen and Team Novo Nordisk so great, they all care and will do anything for anyone!! They are role models and they are changing diabetes!!
